Rider Report:

Our weekend started similar to previous race meetings this year, stressful and very busy for the team. Our first qualifying session was wet, we set the #1 bike up for those conditions so we could collect data. We ended the session in tenth place, just outside top eight for Superpole. Thankfully the track dried up for the second session. Although I never managed to complete a full lap before having a problem that forced me out. This was to be our final session but due to earlier delays this session was cut short and they gave us another short twenty minute session at the end of the day. Which was very lucky as my time in the wet session meant I would not have qualified for the races! So we all quickly turned the spare bike back into a dry bike, even I got in and spun the spanners with my leathers still on as we had very little time.

With only four minute left in the session I was sitting in tenth, as we still had a new tyre left I said to the boys put that new tyre in and be ready for anything. As I left the pits there was two minute left in session I had a new rear slick tyre and it had just started to lightly sprinkle rain. I had only one option, close my eyes and open the gas. My lap was enough to put me well inside the top eight in sixth. Superpole here we come.

We made some changes for superpole some worked some didn’t, but at least I was able to entertain the crowd and managed to improve one position to fifth.

Race one I made a decent start, I was pinched for a jump start but was unable to be shown video proof, so I had to take it on the chin. Which was a shame as throughout the race for the first time this year we managed to get stronger as the race went on. We were down on speed but were able to look after the tyres better I went in to the last lap in sixth but crossed the line in fourth. Other than the 10 seconds penalty it was a great result for us and nice to see some smiles.

Race two I had different rear tyre that wasn’t as consistent as race one. However in the early stages I managed to barge my way into second place, by far the closest to the front I have been all year. I was doing all I could to stay with the leaders but was losing out in areas I could do nothing about. The last few laps I was lapping quicker than the riders in front but was unable to get in front so got stuck at their pace. Finishing in sixth place was still an improvement and we made steps forward with the bike. We now have a few weeks off which the team desperately needs to get on top of a few things.

I on the other hand am in the final stages of finalizing a deal to race at the Phillip Island round of Moto 2, so fingers crossed everything falls into place and I will be on the grid racing with the best riders in the world.

Massive thanks to the sponsors and partners that have helped get me to this stage for the Moto 2 ride and of course assisting me throughout the entire 2010 season.

Jarrod Bewley – Pro E1 class winner

“I felt over the whole four days I put in a solid effort,” said Bewley.  “I led the E1 class for most days, and only had some pressure from a young guy who was keeping me honest.  I had no crashes in any special test, and the KTM 250 EXC F ran awesome.  The Motorex KTM Off-Road Racing team are really to be commended on a great racing environment, and an awesome support network.  Everyone put in to making this a great A4DE.

Toby Price – Pro E2 class & outright winner

“The A4DE didn’t start as planned, and I had a crash on day one, but I just told myself that’s part of racing and continued on. “The second day went well, and I lost a little bit of time to Merriman, but the third day I picked it up, and worked out what to do, and it all went from there.    I got a good start in the final moto, and was sitting in second for a bit on a lap, but then everything clicked and I got it together and zoned in for the win. “The terrain was awesome we were lucky to have had the rain moulding the tracks to near perfect condition.  The KTM 450 EXC was an unbelievable bike, and it did its job to get me across the line in first.  It’s all in the set up of the bike to help you feel comfortable and the KTM boys had my set up perfect, and I just feel really thankful to them for that.

Looking at our final results they don’t look a great deal different to the last event, however that can’t be further from the truth. What we achieved over the weekend was something that the team and I are fairly proud of.

What we learnt over the weekend was that both the team and I need to work a little more on our consistency; we have now shown we have the speed which is a massive relief after some very tough weeks after the last event.

Losing the Friday’s sessions due to wet weather was something that hurt our testing program a little more than we had expected. We really needed some extra time to fine tune our race set up, as in qualifying we have to try and save our tyres as we only get two sets for both sessions plus Superpole. And for the first time all year we were quietly confident that we would make Superpole.

Not only did we reach our best qualifying position of the year, we did make it into Superpole. Then on top of that we managed to put together a solid Superpole lap that moved us up a few positions on the grid to earn our very first front row start on the KTM RC8R. Stark contrast to the previous round, where we only completed three laps in qualifying.

Race one was more me than anything else going wrong, I got bumped very wide early on then rode very tight not finding a good rhythm at all. We also found that a few things on our package needs to be refined that will also help a lot over race distance, it’s still very early with the new electronics we are developing and now I can feel we are moving in the right direction. Still we finished much closer to the winner than the last races which was a positive step forward.

Race two I was much more relaxed and looking forward to the battles ahead, we had made some small changes to the set up that we thought would help. In the early laps I was having some trouble for top speed and acceleration, thinking it was just the different conditions and a slightly revised tune I kept trying to push. However it was not just me, I soon realized if I don’t start backing down the revs I would not make it to the finish. So I had to step out of the battle and ride to finish. Even with some problems we managed to score some decent points and the bike went the whole distance.

I find it hard to not be excited about the future development and what we can achieve next, the team has been working some very long hours over recent weeks and although it has taken us until now to show what we can do, we are still a long way from finished yet! Next up is a circuit that I enjoy and it can’t come soon enough.

Massive thanks to the team for working so hard to get us where we are and also the great support we have from the fans and sponsors.

SHANE VAN GISBERGEN STARTS SEASON STRONG IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Saturday, August 28th, 2010
Shane van Gisbergen ? Driver, SP Tools Racing Car #9

“The car was really good in qualifying this afternoon, we made it into the shootout but for my flying lap we had the tyre pressures mixed up a little bit and the balance of the car wasn’t quite right so we didn’t nail it there.

“I got a reasonable start in the race but pretty much got beaten up on the first lap. At the end of the straight I was hit from behind and I was just a bowling ball into everyone else so I ended up 19th. The car was a little bent after the incident but we still had good speed so for the rest of the race I just tried to pass as many cars as I could.

“In the last stint we really pushed it, we set the fastest lap of the race, the lap record. The car was great in that stint so I pushed on and was able to make up places to finish sixth.

“We have another shot at it in race two so if we start from the front part of the grid we should have a good go at it tomorrow.”

Podium a near miss for Tander – SP Tools ‘Official Tool Supplier To The Holden Racing Team’

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

It just wasn’t Toll HRT’s day today in Race 2 at Hidden Valley with Garth Tander just missing out on a podium position and finishing fifth. His team-mate Will Davison was on track for a top ten before a late race incident relegated him down the order to 18th.

Starting from pole position after setting the fastest time in the 20 minute qualifying session earlier today, Tander leapt off the start line. He took control of the race early on before battling with Lowndes for the lead.

Dropping a few spots to cars on soft tyres Tander decided to pit on lap 11 for fuel and fresh tyres. Re-entering the race mid pack he was determined to surpass his performance yesterday and a focused Tander drove a hard fought, consistent race. He pitted again on lap 39 and from there it was a race to the end.

In a nail biting finish Tander was looking promising to finish on the podium before the safety car was called with 10 laps to go. Tander lost position on the restart to Lowndes and then another to Alex Davison who was running soft tyres. He completed the race to finish in fifth.

Tander’s team-mate Will Davison also qualified in the top ten in the second qualifying session and looked set to make it a double podium for the weekend.

Davison’s strategy had him pitting for the first time on lap 8 for fuel and tyres and then on again on lap 34. One of the silent movers and shakers Davison was sixth with just over 10 laps left in the race but after an incident with James Courtney he was left careering across the grass with only laps to go. He managed to salvage 18th position.

Michael Caruso won the race with Alex Davison crossing the line second. Craig Lowndes was third across the line.

Tander accrued the most points for the weekend and made up considerable ground on the Championship front runners and with 954 points currently sits third. Davison managed to haul enough points to maintain second and with 1128 points only sits 144 points behind Whincup.

With Event 5 now complete the Championship Series moves to Townsville for Event 6 in three weeks time.

The Toll HRT Team will remain in Darwin over the next few days to prepare the cars for the next event.

Garth Tander – #2 Toll Holden Racing Team VE Commodore (Qualifying: 1st, 1:09.7929; Race 10: 5th)

“There’s a little bit of ‘ifs’, ‘buts’ and ‘what could have beens’, but considering the tyres we had to play with – all the cars in front had the soft tyres on at some stage during the race and we ran the entire 69 laps on the standard tyre – fifth was probably as close as possible to the best result. We got stuffed up at the restart by Dale Wood and that hurt as Lowndes got past and ended up third. Wood needs to go back to Formula Ford because he’s seriously out of his depth. We’ve been talking for a while about putting the lapped cars to the back for the restarts, and maybe with 10 laps to go we do that so the real cars can go racing again. Overall, if you add up the points we’d be close to winning the round using the old system, so a load of good points this weekend. We’re solidly third in the championship now and, more importantly, we showed that we’ve got a very fast car now.”

Will Davison – #22 Toll Holden Racing Team VE Commodore (Qualifying: 7th, 1:10.1132; Race 10: 18th)

“We had 56 laps of great racing; I was having a great race, everything was working smoothly and we weren’t making any mistakes … then the restart!  The soft tyres are ridiculous enough as they are, and to bring out the Safety Car for no reason. I had one spin on a bunch of junk brought onto the track by one of the JD cars, that put me back in the pack and then I was hit from pillar to post. Old Courtney, his reputation speaks for itself, he just fired me off. 56 really good laps and hard work ruined at the end by a disappointing series of incidents.”
